Intro:
Freelancers, YouTubers, consultants, and gig workers — if you’re earning from clients, content, or side hustles, you’re required to file ITR just like salaried folks.
But don’t worry — here’s a simple, step-by-step guide to file your ITR stress-free and save tax smartly.
Step 1: Know Which ITR to File
Step 2: Collect These Documents
- Bank statement (all accounts)
- Invoices sent to clients
- TDS certificates (Form 16A)
- Form 26AS & AIS from income tax portal
- Expense bills (laptop, rent, software, travel, etc.)
Step 3: Calculate Total Income & Expenses
- Use Excel or apps like Vyapar, Zoho Books
- Declare only net profit if using Section 44ADA (50% of gross receipts)
Step 4: Login to https://incometax.gov.in
- Go to “File Income Tax Return”
- Choose FY 2024-25 → Individual → ITR-4
- Fill in income details + bank account + deduction claims
- Validate with Aadhaar OTP
Step 5: Pay Advance Tax (if applicable)
- If your tax liability exceeds ₹10,000 in a year
- Pay in 4 installments (June, Sept, Dec, Mar) to avoid interest under 234B/234C
Pro Tips:
- Don’t ignore TDS! Many clients deduct 10% — claim it in your ITR
- Use Form 26AS + AIS to cross-check reported income
- Declare foreign payments (PayPal, Wise, etc.) under FCRA if received from abroad
